After a decade working inside large companies, I’ve learned that culture is important for making transformation possible. You can’t force people to change. But you can create the conditions that make them willing to join your initiative.
In the early stages of transformation you need specific cultural conditions to succeed:
Finding Early Adopters
To create an early group of champions you need visibility across organizational silos. This is how people can discover others who share their interests and concerns. These early adopters also need permission to organize informally, to form coalitions and communities without navigating layers of hierarchy.
Without these conditions, early adopters may remain isolated. Even if they believe in the change, they cannot find others to form a community and build the critical mass needed to get started.
Getting Early Wins
Teams need access to resources they can deploy quickly, without high level approvals or months of business case development. They also need the psychological safety to experiment without risking their careers if things don’t work out.
If every small project requires executive sign-off and failure carries consequences, then teams will not act at all or they wait until everything feels “perfect”. This can lead the transformation to stall.
Celebrating Early Wins
Early success only matters if it becomes visible. Successful teams need forums where they can share their success beyond the immediate colleagues. This will create social proof that change is working and that it is safe to participate.
Without these platforms, early progress stays hidden, skepticism spreads and momentum for change never builds.
The Bottom Line
You can have the right strategy and a capable team. But if the cultural infrastructure isn’t there, transformation will be slow. Transformation leaders have to work to create the right cultural conditions for change to happen.
